BOMBANANA! Multiplayer: Crossplay and Online Co-op

Multiplayer & CrossplayUpdated: 2026-09-24✓ manual-verified

BOMBANANA! is a strictly 3-player online co-op game. No solo, no duo, no bots — the Steam page lists Multi-player, Co-op, and Online Co-op, and the game's entire design assumes exactly three humans: one Blind, one Deaf, one Mute. There is no local co-op or split-screen, and no crossplay — which is expected, since the game exists only on Steam.

Exactly Three Players

The three-role design (Blind, Deaf, Mute) means the math of the game is fixed at three. A two-player team is missing a link in the information chain; a fourth player has no role to play. Every bomb, every mode, every level in BOMBANANA! assumes the trio.

Practical implication: before you buy, make sure you have two friends (or a willingness to find teammates). This is a game about your specific trio's communication failures — it is not a drop-in/drop-out lobby shooter.

How Lobbies Work

The full version gives you three ways to assemble a team:

  • Matchmaking — queue up alone and the game finds two teammates for you. Added in v1.0.2, this is the path for solo players who do not have a trio ready.
  • Server browser — join an open lobby without being Steam friends with anyone.
  • Room codes — share a code and your friends join directly. Since v1.0.2 there is also a button to quickly hide or reveal the code in the lobby.

The demo-era restriction (lobbies could only be built from Steam friend invites) is gone in the launch version. Lobbies also gained a Random Role button that assigns the three roles by chance — useful for teams who cannot decide who gets stuck being the Mute.

Roles rotate between rounds, so over a session everyone plays every monkey.

Voice Chat — and Why Teams Use Discord

BOMBANANA!'s voice design is role-restricted, which is the game's cleverest twist on co-op chat:

  • The Mute monkey is actually muted in-game by design.
  • The Deaf monkey cannot hear any in-game voice at all.
  • Only the Blind↔Deaf spoken channel works in-game.

Because the Deaf player cannot hear the game's voice channel, virtually every team runs an external voice app (Discord or similar) alongside the game for the full three-way conversation. The community consensus from launch-week players: in-game voice quality was spotty in the first hours after launch, so Discord (or your platform equivalent) is effectively the standard setup, with the game treating the voice restriction as a roleplay constraint rather than a technical necessity.

Hotfix v1.0.1 (September 3, 2026) fixed the worst of the voice problems: cracking and distorted voice audio, players who could not hear or speak at all, and voice chat bleeding into the Report panel in 3D after returning to the lobby. v1.0.2 (September 10, 2026) made further adjustments to the sound and voice chat systems and added a button to hide and reveal the lobby code. If voice still misbehaves, verify your game is on the latest build before blaming your headset — full changelog in the patch notes. One launch issue remains known and open: random crashes, still under investigation by Lefto Studio.

Social Mechanics Between Rounds

The multiplayer layer includes the game's signature physical comedy:

  • Throwing bananas at teammates
  • Slapping each other
  • A middle-finger emote
  • Basketball and bottle-throwing interactions (both tracked by achievements)

These are not just decoration — they are the social pressure-release valve for a game whose core loop is stressful communication. Slapping is tradition after a failed defusal.

No Local Co-op

Steam lists no local co-op or split-screen feature, and the game's design confirms why: the Blind monkey's screen is nearly black, the Mute's manual is a private interface, and each role's screen intentionally hides information from the others. One shared screen would collapse the entire information asymmetry the game is built on. If you want couch play, the workaround is three machines in one room, all on voice.

Crossplay Status

Crossplay does not exist — and cannot meaningfully exist yet — because BOMBANANA! is sold only on Steam. Windows and macOS players on Steam play together seamlessly. If console versions are ever announced (see the platforms guide), cross-platform support would become a real question; today it is not, and any site claiming the game supports phone-to-PC crossplay is describing a fake version of the game.
